Taste one of the best pizzas on the market thanks to their old, traditional, foolproof method of leavening pizza dough.
The menu presents a vast choice of starters, pasta, and, of course, pizzas - the food they're most known for. They also offer a variety of dishes based on meat and fish, as well as a range of salads for those who want a healthier option. To top it off, they have a bunch of mouthwatering desserts worth trying.
What makes this place stand out the most is the quality of natural ingredients: from the tomato sauce and Agerola fior di latte to the Friarelli and Cetara anchovies. These are all products coming directly from the region of Campania, where pizza was first invented.
You can then transport yourself to the south of Italy thanks to their desserts:
babà, a traditional sweet soaked in rum syrup;
lemon delight, typical of the Sorrento and Amalfi coast;
nodini, which translates literally to "little knots", and are made out of the same dough used to make pizza, and then covered with powdered sugar, Nutella, or other toppings.
As Michele affirms: "there are only two types of Neapolitan Pizza, the “Marinara” and the “Margherita”; and no “junk” should be used in making the pizza that could alter its world-famous genuineness and taste".
So, of course, I had to try the Marinara - with added friarelli on top - to really see what the fuss was about, and let me tell you my tastebuds weren't disappointed at all.
You could taste the fresh tomato sauce and the friarelli brought me back to Naples, where my parents are from.
We also had the Truffle Mushrooms, which won the Champion London Pizza Festival, and Siciliana, which had fried aubergines. Just as the Marinara, both were very good and tasty and lived up to our expectations.
Fun fact
L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele was featured in the book, and then film, Eat Pray Love, starring Julia Roberts as the main protagonist. Author Elizabeth Gilbert paid a visit to this spot after being suggested as the place selling the best pizza in Naples. After ordering a Margherita with double mozzarella she affirmed that the pizza "was making her lose her mind" and continued by saying: "I love my pizza so much, in fact, that I have come to believe in my delirium that my pizza might actually love me, in return. I am having a relationship with the pizza, almost an affair.".
